(NSFW) l'etranger series - kii kanna

hello. earlier this year i decided i wanted to delve into the yaoi genre after someone in a server i moderate sent a furry yaoi manga and i thought it was pretty cool. unfortunately most yaoi is mediocre at best . BUT !! this series was the exception. the nsfw warning is just bc they have sex but its not for the readers gratification and is censored. i cannot write compelling descriptions of stories i like oh my fucking god. im just gonna copy the one on mangadex again

Three years ago, Hashimoto Shun, a gay novelist in the making, met Chibana Mio, a very quiet high school student, in Okinawa. if you like these i recommend kii kanna's earlier work mahou ga tsukaenakutemo (even if i cant use magic) it hops between a couple different characters and doesnt really have a "resolution" but i dont think that's a drawback personally. also if you have yaoi recommendations . HAND THEM OVER

oh my god l'etranger!! ive read this series too, i love it, its great. i especially love its art style. it even has an animated movie adaptation! it doesnt cover all of it if i remember correctly, but i liked it. ifound it during my "yaoi" era as i like to call it, and i should really read it again, its one of the few ones that really stood out to me. i remember seeing your tumblr pfp and recognising it!!

and other good yaoi out there, oh god i gotta go back through my old myreadingmanga likes but i know there are some good ones. i mostly read the more kind of porn-y ones though, so watch out for that. ill come back and reply with some actually good recs ^ ^

that said, the thing you said with most yaoi being mediocre at best is so true tho.....
i first discovered the genre of bl/yaoi with Given (anime/manga about two gay boys in a band) when i was like 14, i then proceded to just watch random yaoi anime (the site i was using had this really cool feature where you could put the genres you wanted and click random, and it would give you a random anime with those genres to watch), this gave me like maybe 4 or 5 anime IN A ROW (and i watched all of them to completion) where the end was some kind of variation of "a girl planned this all along!! what? in love? no, silly, you see it was just the girl's plan to put them in these situations, men cant be in love with eachother!" or "a girl appear. weird love triangle happens out of nowhere and then one of the two boys ends up with the girl and the other boy basically goes "its better this way" <- forgot the entire show was about building up the relationship between the two of them"
and this string of things happening made me so mad that i genuinely stopped watching any new anime for like 3 years.
i think its also kinda crazy how its way easier to find yuri that is at least above average compared to yaoi, like, is it that hard to write boys loving each other compared to girls???

ps: please watch Given, its really good, also one of the gay boys is maybe autism coded and i think hes awesome

finally came back to finding some old yaoi manga i used to like, and then realised that. theres not too much of quality here!! oh well, ill just post the ones i remember liking.

He Was My Brother - i dont actually remember where the gay bit is in this, i think a character had a boyfriend. but this series is still pretty engaging, a girl goes to visit her brother whose boyfriend died, and after that starts having weird occurances with ghosts and death in general. seems to be a story focusing on trauma, grief, and secrets. geneuinely maybe the only print (or digital print media) thats like. jumpscared me. - https://mangadex.org/title/9adabe75-571b-4811-b543-3d3be83d7baf/he-was-my-brother

Wadatsumi no Yometori/Zhen/Monzen Yayohi in general (all NSFW) - this is the only author i kind of stuck on to as liking and reading a bunch of their stuff. their stories generally seem to focus on inhuman characters, and then their relationships with human ones. Wadatsumi no Yometori is kind of old man yaoi actually, its between a merman and a human that accidentally married him, and the human's want to die normally (not very much sex in this). then theres a oneshot and short series taking place in the same world, about bird people who are kept by humans called Zhen and Zhenniao. these are kind of focused around sex from what i remember, so watch out. these have some interesting storybuilding, even if its just in the service of yaoi. set in an ancient china setting.

i will check those out. i dont dislike nsfw stuff its just not something i really seek out . your comment on the art reminded me of a yaoi i read that wasnt really anything spectacular story or character wise but had a really interesting art style that drew me in. reminds me of 60s graphic design i have no idea if this link will work (art example) and here is the link to the actual story

oh this art style is interesting, its like if mapollo 3's stylisation in his art was applied to the classic 'yaoi' style, with lineart that reminds me of haruko ichikawa's (mangaka of houseki no kuni/land of the lustrous). Really unique! and i was searching around and there... seems to be a movie adaptation of it? it has the same name but the main characters have different names, although there is also a sister movie that was released on the same day. i'm assuming the movie with the same name isnt an adaptation, the title is a pretty common word in japanese. weird!
